      Abstract

The amount of iron assimilated by the marrow and the time required for its incorporation into hemoglobin in vivo has been studied in the rabbit. Approximately 80 per cent of transferrin-bound radioiron was localized within the skeleton, and approximately 80 per cent of this iron was incorporated into hemoglobin within 1 hour. Additional studies of hemoglobin versus nonhemoglobin iron in rats, dogs, and in man indicated a similarly rapid and complete process of heme synthesis. It is concluded that there is no preheme pool of appreciable size involved in normal erythropoiesis in these species.
