Quantitative measurement of human gamma-2, beta-2A, and beta-2M serum immunoglobulins

      Abstract

      Levels of gamma-2, beta-2A, and beta-2M globulins were measured in human serum by a modification of Oudin's method of single precipitation in agar. Commercial antisera to each of the three immunoglobulins formed a single precipitin band with human serum. This band is specific for the corresponding globulin. The method is sufficiently simple and reproducible for routine laboratory use. Mean immunoglobulin levels in fifty-four normal sera were 1,194 mg. per cent for gamma-2 globulin, 395 mg. per cent for beta-2A globulin, and 191 mg. per cent for beta-2M globulin. Sera from patients with a variety of clinical conditions, including hypogammaglobulinemia, macroglobulinemia, myeloma, and lymphoma, contained abnormal amounts of immunoglobulin.
