A previously undescribed binder of vitamin B12 was found in the plasma of 8 patients with polycythemia vera in relapse. It could be separated from the normal plasma B12 transport proteins, transcobalamin I and II. The polycythemia vera (PV) binder (1) was not retained on CM-cellulose, (2) had α2- to β-mobility at pH 8.6, (3) was not taken up by HeLa cells, (4) did not carry endogenous B12, (5) shared antibody reactions with TC I, and (6) had a molecular size of 121,000.
