Abstract
Changes in plasma LH and FSH in response to the administration of varying doses of
ethinyl estradiol (EE) alone, or with medroxyprogesterone acetate or clomiphene, were
determined in 15 postmenopausal women. During the control periods considerable random
day-to-day fluctuations in plasma gonadotropin levels occurred. Partial or complete
gonadotropin suppression was observed with doses of EE as low as 5 μg daily, although
a dose of 10 μg daily was needed to produce a consistent suppression of plasma LH
and FSH in the majority of subjects. The previously observed progestogen-stimulated
“ovulatory” surge in LH and FSH was confirmed in subjects whose gonadotropins were
suppressed by large doses of EE but not by small doses. Clomiphene administration
to subjects partially blocked the suppression of gonadotropin levels by EE.
